In volume 12 of Hayate the Combat Butler manga, Hata-sensei made a reference to a character from Negima! (specifically, Nagi Springfield). Considering that Negima! is my favorite manga followed closely in 2nd place by Hayate the Combat Butler, the reference was much appreciated by me.
Several weeks ago, I was notified by someone (or some people, I can’t remember which) about a picture of Hata-sensei and Akamatsu-sensei together. I saved the picture, which I believe was a Japanese fan snapping a shot of a magazine article in which the two manga-ka appear. I had intended to share it once I returned from traveling the country but things have been so hectic of late, I barely have time to get a blog entry a day up. ^_^;
That now changes as I rediscovered the picture on one of my flash drives and now I’m sharing it with you guys.
Give Hata-sensei some blue hair and he seems like Hayate. Akamatsu-sensei has always seemed like Keitaro from Love Hina.
For those who have better memories than mine, can you let me know what magazine the two appeared in? I’d appreciate it. ^_^
You know what would be cool? Some crossover art from the two manga-ka having some of their main characters interacting.
I don’t know the magazine but I can guess it was in Shounen Magazine… since Negima is definitely in that magazine and Hayate MIGHT be in it.
Weren’t Akamatsu and Hata planning to work together? I know I heard about a possible collaboration or something over at Canned Dogs.
Someone should confirm this.
Ain’t that cool?
Check it out: more references ( i think )

According to the top left and wikipedia (thanks! π )
this is
” a rare event due to the closeness of the two magazine’s founding dates, Weekly ShΕnen Sunday and Weekly ShΕnen Magazine released a special combined issue[1] on March 19, 2008. In addition, other commemorative events, merchandise, and manga crossovers were planned for the following year as part of the celebrations.”
add: Except that this one looks like it’s from this year and not the 2008 year.
So this should be from march 2009 instead.
this was of the 50th anniversary.
yeah, 50th. They were created almost at the same time in 1959.

A game was made too, celebrating the 50th anniversary, with a lot of crossovers. Including negi and hayate. here :

So I believe you have the date and what it is, now =P.
Thanks, Zefyris. ^_^
I ship it.

About Akamatsu-sensei resembling Keitaro… small world for thought trains. (^_^)
Recently I’ve been rewatching Love Hina, and there’ve been a few times now that a drawing of Keitaro in pathetic mode has sharply reminded me of the handful of Akamatsu-sensei self-portraits I’ve ever seen. But seeing him IRL in this pic, the resemblance to normal Keitaro is even sharper. I’m glad you posted it.
